About us
The craft of letter carving in stone has been passed down from master to apprentice over the centuries and continues to thrive today.
At the Lettering Arts Trust, we support, develop and act as advocates for this age-old yet contemporary craft. We are committed to ensuring the craft continues to develop and flourish, creating works that communicate what matters most to us today with future generations.
A carved inscription
A carved inscription reveals the hand of the maker, each mark of the chisel connecting artist with viewer through words made physical. In a world increasingly mediated through screens, this connection is more important than ever.
We believe that the most beautiful garden, contemplative space or wildest landscape can be enhanced by a few words carved in stone. It’s an enduring expression of our human connection to time, place, nature and each other.
Our story
The Lettering Arts Trust was founded in 1988 by Harriet Frazer MBE as Memorials by Artists. This was in response to Harriet’s need to find someone to make a unique memorial for her step-daughter Sophie, who died suddenly at the age of 26. It was hard at that time to find a letter carving artist, but harder still discovering that church regulations prevented her from inscribing her daughter’s poetry onto a memorial.
When Harriet finally did find artist Simon Verity, she determined that other people wanting to mark the life of a loved one should not have to go through what she had to. So she formed Memorials by Artists to help others, and help sustain the art and craft of creating unique well-designed memorials.
“I knew there must be so many others who wanted something beautiful. I liked the idea of helping the bereaved as well as artists and the clergy to wend their way along the route.”
