Ed Hall

I have been carving letters since leaving college in 1995. I worked for Belinda Eade, an artist based in London who inspired me to have a more artistic approach to memorials.

I then had the opportunity to work for lettering artist Martin Cook on the British Museum’s new reading room.  I learnt a great deal from Martin about letter forms and design, he gave me memorial work as well as his knowledge and guidance.

Upon moving back to Dorset in 2001, my college lecturer, letter carver Andrew Whittle, provided some interesting work especially the Animals in War monument in London which stands out as it meant living for five weeks in a caravan in the middle of Park Lane.

My main ethos is to create a personal memorial – not working from a brochure and fitting the inscription to a commercial shape. I believe that the words lead to the design of the entire memorial to create a bespoke and beautiful memorial for your loved one.
