Louise Tiplady
After training as a stonemason and carver in Weymouth in 1998, I worked as a stonemason in Herefordshire until 2005. I then moved to Norfolk to be an apprentice to Charlotte Howarth to learn the demanding art of lettering and letter carving.
Much of my work is designing and carving memorials to commission though I have designed and carved a Saint for Aldeburgh Catholic Church in Suffolk in recent years.
The pieces that I have worked on in stone and wood vary greatly in scale. I enjoy combining words and texture, and love making beautifully shaped objects from heavy, unforgiving materials. The text I choose is rarely well known, is preferably easy for others to relate to, and is often made up by me specifically for the piece of work. I love the way that the process of carving with a hammer and chisel can leave very distinctive marks in the stone, which can be used to create movement and flow.
