Simon Langsdale
I am a letter carver with a background as a calligrapher and a love of history and crafts, all of which inform my lettering design.
My work consists mainly of memorials but I also undertake public art commissions, plaques and stones for gardens. I also exhibit and make smaller pieces as gifts. Whether I am making a memorial or a piece for a garden setting, my aim is to listen closely to my clients so that I can interpret their ideas with sensitivity to create work that has meaning for them.
The teaching of both calligraphy and letter carving is a very important part of my practice as it allows me to pass on my skills to others so that they can enjoy the joy of creating hand-made lettering. As we become an ever-more digitised world, using our hands to make things is I believe, becoming an essential need for our well-being.
