Alphabet Stone by Richard Klose
Caithness stone
Caithness is one of the very few stones that can be taken from the ground in slab form and have a natural finish on all sides. For this reason it has been used for standing stones since Neolithic times.
‘For this piece I was drawn to the stone’s rugged natural beauty and its long history of human use. I used the alphabet, the building blocks of language, to free the observer from reading an inscription – allowing them to consider the stone as a whole, and as a natural object. The letters wrap around the stone to bring out the contrast between the front and back faces.
