Friends Trip to Oxford
Friends of The Lettering Arts Trust were granted special access to parts Oxford College, Christ Church, not open to the public. The Dean’s gardens, which inspired Alice in Wonderland, and the remarkable rare books in the library, were highlights. Master carver John Neislon talked about his work in the cathedral and also Gary Breeze’s lead fountain and planter. Lettering artist and book designer, Edward Wates gave insight into the calligraphy and other treasures.
Following a delicious lunch as guests of the college we went to New College, where we viewed Eric Gills huge World War two memorial, Joshua Reynold’s stained glass window and Epstein’s sculpture of Lazarus.
