Alphabets 1 by UNA SULLIVAN

Alphabets 1 by UNA SULLIVAN

These gesso panels were constructed using MDF as the substrate with twenty four coats of Italian gesso applied (whiting, rabbit skin glue and water) and rubbed down to a smooth surface, achieving just enough depth for me to create letters and pattern. All carving was carried out with a no.11 scalpel blade apart from areas that needed to be cleared when a pushing tool (lino cutter) was used.

“Alphabet 1” is a monoline alphabet that uses Berthold Wolpe’s basic poster alphabet as the foundation, most especially in the particular method of construction that he taught using a pen (broad edged nib).

Scalpel carved MDF gesso panels - framed 215 x 215 mm.
