Artist statement

As an artist my main interest is to explore the expressive visual potential of language and the written word using various media and writing implements including fabric, wood, stone, glass and collage. I work with pens or brushes, sometime on paper or canvas, sometime with metal and glass, with encaustic wax or gold leaf, the starting point is normally the text, a word, a quotation or poem which could inspire a choice of materials, colour scheme and a unique design. I alternate working on commissions with creating art for exhibitions and sale.

Painting at Kew: From the poem by Lorna Patterson, by permission of River Thames Society.

The reason I’ve choose this poem is because I wanted to celebrate the river Thames which I love, as well as I love painting. In Lorna’s poem the river is like an artist painting the course of the day with flowing brush strokes and evocative colours. My piece is on box canvas, the traditional support favoured by painters. The background and the words are painted /written with acrylic and gouache and the colour scheme is dictated by the artist’s palette described by the poem, the writing is flowy and informal as the gentle ripples of the water.
