Two Ancient Oaks by DEE HOWLEY GIBBS

Two Ancient Oaks by DEE HOWLEY GIBBS

Metal nibs, brushes, imitation gold gouache, acrylic ink, pastel on Saunders Waterford paper

Artist statement

Calligrapher and Tutor.

Two Ancient Oaks: Reading this long descriptive paragraph in Paul O'Grady's book "Country Life", I thought , "What a way with words". Then, a CLAS email arrived with the exhibition title "A Way with Words"; what a coincidence, and so it seemed right to use this paragraph. With A2 size restriction and many necessary words, I chose a 'classic' layout to keep them legible and colours to recreate his magical 'cathedral' scene (only visible in my actual piece).

Text used by kind permission of author Paul O’Grady

Materials: Saunders Waterford HP 300gsm paper which was stretched on a board and acrylic inks applied with brushes plus pastel additions; imitation gold gouache and metals nibs for the lettering.
