Artist statement

Caroline is a Lettering Artist working from her studio in Wiltshire creating paintings to commission and for exhibition. Art at Clevancy was created by and continues to be managed by Caroline as a venue for hosting and providing calligraphy courses.

The Flight of Song: A summer’s evening. A last minute decision to go to a concert where a friend is conducting his school choir in Ramsbury Church. Towards the end of the interval the girls start talking strangely, loudly, accelerating as they move back to the Chancel Arch. We scurry to our pews. This is how Howard Skempton’s setting of Longfellow’s Flight of Song begins.

I am totally enthralled by the story, the music, the performance. It moves me and my pew friends to tears. Home, I order the CD and the sheet music. I sing it in the car, in my waking hours, much musing. I play with letterforms, layout, paint, paint, paint and a background emerges. Suddenly one day the shape of the letters works in my sketch book. I work flat out to finish it, loving this concentrated time, still singing…..
