Gouache, watercolours on Arches paper

Artist statement

With no art, or design training, or experience, I became interested – and later obsessed – with calligraphy in later life. This led to taking a diploma course at Roehampton University and I have not looked back since. My passion is colour and its application to words and design.

A Winter’s evening: I was attracted to this riddle style quote and found using the formality of blackletter in the round to be an attractive challenge. The colour scheme was of course simple and related to the deck of cards. The materials, likewise, were very straightforward, gouache on Saunders Waterford paper, using a Brause nib. The illustration was a compendium of joker pictures.
