John McTigue
Aer(AirIlma)
365 x 105 x 77 mm

Portland stone
“The piece contains two words AIR and ILMA. AIR meaning air and ILMA being the Finnish word for air. The AER in the title is the Irish for air.
The choice of words arises from a chance meeting at Little Sparta with Dr. Niina Turtola, an academic and text designer/artist.
Dr. Turtola has produced a concrete poem with these words typed over and over again on a 20m length of till paper.
The piece Air,Ilma, “… investigates the realm beyond typographic expression … how a poem tastes, looks, or feels ...” “
This piece is made in response to that investigation.
Original Artwork Produced for the Letters Unlimited Exhibition, 2026; where each artist was invited to select a piece of stone from a Portland quarry to create a work that will showcase the possibilities of letter carving.
John McTigue is a former Journeyman at LAT.
