BOOK ENDS BY MARK NOAD

£420.00

The Book Ends

Two pieces, 235 x 100 x 80 mm each

2.8kg each

As curator of this exhibition, I wasn’t expecting to produce work for it. But wandering around the yard at Albion Stone, I came across several small mouldings I thought would make ideal book ends. Thinking about it on my drive back to London, the words ‘last page’ came to mind because that is where a book ends!

I have very little experience of letter carving so enlisted the help of master carver Annet Stirling. Having designed the letters and drawn them on the stone, I took them to Annet’s studio where she handed me a chisel and dummy. Under her expert guidance, I carved the letters with Annet providing the final tidying up of my slightly shaky work.

Original Artwork Produced for the Letters Unlimited Exhibition, 2026; where each artist was invited to select a piece of stone from a Portland quarry to create a work that will showcase the possibilities of letter carving. This piece was created alongside Journeymen, Apprentices and Master Carvers that the LAT support. Mark Noad is a Designer and Director of the Lettering Arts Trust.
