DEEP TIME BY MIRELLA MCGEE

£3,990.00

Mirella McGee

Deep Time

1,800 x 360 x 158 mm

165 kg

Carved in Portland stone, which formed during the Late Jurassic period around 150 million years ago, this totem is a playful take on the stone’s origin. The word JURASSIC takes centre stage, surrounded by examples of flora and fauna of the period. I wanted to explore the capabilities of the material through as much intricate carving and detail as possible, creating a piece that celebrates both the versatility of stone and the extraordinary prehistoric world to which it owes its existence.

This work is an original artwork deigned and created by McGee as part of The Letters Unlimited Exhibition, created alongside Master Carvers, Apprentices and Journeymen that the LAT support.

Each artist was invited to select a piece of stone from a Portland quarry to create a work that will showcase the possibilities of letter carving, that will surprise, amaze – astound even – with what can be achieved by hand in stone using lettering.

We asked them to be inspired by the piece of stone they selected, challenge themselves, and push the boundaries of their lettering experience. McGee is currently working with Teucer Wilson as part of the LAT Apprenticeship scheme.
