Petrichor

584 × 177 × 40 mm

Portland Stone

“Petrichor is the distinctive earthy scent of fresh rain on dry ground, especially noticeable after a long dry spell. The word was coined in 1964 by Australian researchers Isabel Bear and Richard Thomas, who investigated the science. Apparently it’s not the rain that smells (as used to be thought), but the interaction with chemicals and plant oils that accumulate on the ground in dry weather. The portmanteau word is derived from the ancient Greek; petra for rock or stone and ichor, the golden blood of the gods.”

Produced for the Letters Unlimited Exhibition where each artist was invited to select a piece of stone from a Portland quarry.

Bernard Johnson is a Master Carver and Mentor for the LAT Journeymen Scheme
