“The words cut into this rough, shelly piece of Portland stone describe the masonry process used to create a flat surface from a block. First a line is scribed, the stone above it is pitched away, and the surface is punched, clawed and finally boasted over to create a flat plane. The piece is designed to pay homage to the strong masonry tradition of the Isle of Portland. It also evokes my own first experience of working Portland stone at Weymouth College – the struggle with new tools and materials, and discovering the look, feel and smell of the cut stone as a flat surface emerges beneath the chisel. “
Produced for the Letters Unlimited Exhibition where each artist was invited to select a piece of stone from a Portland quarry to create a work that will showcase the possibilities of letter carving.
Jemma Routledge is a former Journeyman at LAT.
