“When a new stone arrives in the workshop it is immediately checked for quality, with a special eye and ear for cracks, variously known as shakes or vents.
If the stone is to live outside the combination of a shake and frost will eventually result in the stone failing, so it is important for the carver to identify any vents and assess whether it is bad enough to reject the stone and ask the supplier for a replacement.
This is a pain for everyone involved.”
This work is an original artwork deigned and created by Surey as part of The Letters Unlimited Exhibition. Each artist was invited to select a piece of stone from a Portland quarry to create a work that will showcase the possibilities of letter carving, that will surprise, amaze – astound even – with what can be achieved by hand in stone using lettering.
Phil Surey is a Master Carver and LAT Mentor
