Three Hares by
Gillian Forbes

Woodkirk buff sandstone

Change has the potential to bring in new life and energy. The front face of the stone shows three hares contained within a circle, while the back is carved with unrestrained wild foliage. This is my response to a housing development in my hamlet in Perthshire, but the enigmatic motif of three interconnected hares endlessly chasing each other has a wider relevance. It has been found not only in Britain but in Europe, China and Iran, and is believed to symbolise rebirth, fertility, and connections with the moon and dawn.’
