The Journey by
Robbie Schneider
Broughton Moor blue-grey slate
The inscription is a line from Dante’s Divine Comedy : ‘In the middle of the journey of our life I found myself in a dark wood…’
‘Dante wrote that the purpose of this great work was “to remove those living in this life from the state of misery, and lead them to the state of felicity” – quite an aspiration and inspiration for any artist. I wanted the piece to be a dividing line in space; a point at which we can choose our direction. The wording is in the original Italian and uses varying letter forms, making it not easy to read. I think we should be prepared to work a little to approach understanding.’
