Wilberforce Standing Stone by
Richard Kindersley
Caithness stone
The artist was asked to create a piece that reflected William Wilberforce’s contribution to the abolition of slavery, and his belief in the divine right of all men to be free.
‘This text, taken from a letter to his sister in which he describes an Easter Sunday, shows Wilberforce at his most poetic – affirming the mystery of life coursing through his body and mind. The lettering is in a condensed lyrical form to resonate with the shape of the stone. The only exception is the extended letter E, which, sprinkled throughout the inscription, gives a unifying structure – a free spirit within the words.’
