Memory Bench by Annet Stirling of Incisive Letterwork

Purbeck Pon Freestone

The text is from ‘The Song of the Poorly Loved’ by the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire, a forefather of surrealism.

“The quarry at St Aldhelms Head in Purbeck, where the stone for this seat was quarried, is very close to the coast. We work there sometimes and have long been interested in boats and the sea. The text evokes regret without pain, and the promise that one might sail far enough one day… The ‘wave’ line divides the text into background and foreground, past and future.”
