‘Ond rhaid yw mynd…’ by Charles Smith

Dunhouse Fine Blue Sandstone

‘Ond rhaid yw mynd…’

But I must go, and must say farewell

To the flowers and the trees

And the wind says

This has always been the way of things.

The inscription is an extract from the poem ‘The River’ by William Jones, translated from the Welsh by Eileen Walker.

“The words paraphrase beautifully and gently that we must all say goodbye to that which we know and love. I have chosen to carve the Welsh and English alternately for visual interest. The movement in the lettering is suggestive of the wind and river, but is also there for its own sake.”
