Our training programme

The main focus of the Trust is to raise funds to train the next generation of letter carvers. Our programme provides new and experienced letter carvers with training, funding and opportunities to exhibit as well as a range of career development services.

Apprentices and other trainees funded by the Trust have gone on to make their career as professional carvers, providing a service valued by those wishing to create something unique and personal, especially when commemorating the life of a loved one.

Working with a mentor on exhibition pieces and commissions, being on site and with clients is such a unique opportunity that this apprenticeship provides.

    Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships run for two years offering students comprehensive, varied and inspirational training in all areas of letter design and letter carving. In addition, apprentices are trained in running a business. The emphasis is on producing professional letter carvers who will continue the craft to the highest standards.

“The apprenticeship scheme is a wonderful thing. It allows each apprentice to learn on real jobs in an established workshop from day one, preparing them in the very best way for their future careers. I believe it has made the world of difference to me personally and I am very grateful.” Jackie Perkins, the Trust’s 8th Apprentice

    Journeyman training

Our journeyman scheme offers tuition, expertise and guidance to further the careers of letter carvers. The scheme helps artists develop specific skills and gain in confidence to become fully self-employed. The awards fund short-term placements with one or more master carvers and usually last two to three months.

“The journeyman scheme has offered the perfect way to continue to develop my skills studying under two masters of the craft.” Imogen Long, LAT Journeyman 2024

    Bursary awards

Our bursary awards provide funds for training, tools or equipment to help people taking their first steps in a letter carving career. It also helps established letter carvers further their career.

“Thank you to the Lettering Arts Trust for the Harriet Frazer Bursary for helping me with what has been an invaluable piece of equipment.” Sue Aperghis, LAT Journeyman 2022 Bursary recipient 2025.

Emerging Carver Symposium

I found it very informative and inspiring, even after having been carving for 16 years. I plan to implement the thoughts on doing things differently. Thank you for today – it has been really fascinating.
— Simon Langsdale, Symposium attendee

This is a biennial online event aimed at artists who are setting out on a career as a professional letter carver. While our other training activities – apprenticeships and journeyman awards – cover the design and carving of letterforms, the Symposium provides insights and advice on how turn those hard-won skills into a career.

Our events have included sessions on the selection of materials, pricing, self-promotion, exhibiting and networking. They also give delegates to opportunity to hear direct from well-known, established masters of their craft.
