A Fragile Balance by Dan Meek
St Bees Head sandstone
This sculpture is designed to be touched, putting the viewer in direct contact with the stone and its textures. It could equally be a resting place for people to sit on or rest against.
‘As a beekeeper myself, I have been inspired and concerned about the well-known quote that if the bees disappear, within four years mankind would no longer exist. My sculpture is a response to this, and hopes to impress upon the viewer the fragility of the balance that exists between mankind and the bees. The two stones meet in a way that suggests a precarious impossibility – but also invokes the action of the bee to the flower, in tender contact, creating a place of pollination and growth.’
