Nautilus by Pippa Westoby

Green slate

The inscription ‘My house grows like the chambered nautilus’ is from the poem ‘This Shell’, by patron of the surrealist art movement, Edward James. James built an extravagant surrealist sculpture park in the Mexican rainforest, and wrote this line on a wall in his living quarters.

‘When I found out about Edward James and his house, I felt that using a line from one of his poems would be a fitting memorial to him. My design is slightly ‘wacky’ to reflect the fact that James was a somewhat eccentric person.’
