Traditional routes into skilled occupations such as letter cutting have eroded over recent decades due to a decline in creative subjects in schools, reduced post-16 training opportunities and a UK apprenticeship system ill-suited to the micro-businesses within which these skills reside. Yet the work of Heritage Crafts reveals a significant upswell of enthusiasm for these careers among young people, as well as cost-effective ways for funders and governments to harness this potential, supporting training models that generate viable, fulfilling careers and safeguard our intangible heritage.
