Alyosha Moeran

My workshop is on a farm just outside Lewes in East Sussex, but I undertake commissions throughout the UK.

The work I undertake is based largely on private and public commissions for interior as well as exterior spaces. My work is also very much for a place or space and for the people for whom it is intended and each piece is just as important and unique.

I studied history at Cambridge University before training as an architectural stonemason and then as a restoration carver at the City and Guilds, London School of Art. It was here that I also learnt the art of lettercarving.

I like carving letters and see it as the “tai chih” of stonework in the way that it is so considered and requires such dexterity and precision of movement. I like to think of letters as sculptures on a miniature scale and text design as pattern and I enjoy combining lettering with carving as well as with sculpture.
